Dear All,
Kids spend six hours a day or more in front of some type of screen. Children as young as preschoolers are spending up to two hours a day in front of TVs, Computers, and Video screens. It is shocking that they are getting programmed at such a young age.
When it comes to physical activity, researchers say that young Canadians sank from a D minus in 2007 to an F in 2008. Screen time is consistently high, whether the kids from rural or urban areas, and across all family income levels. Boys spend more time playing Video games while girls tend to become more absobed in social networking websites and text messaging . Whether at school or on the bus, they can be online or texing at every moment of every day.
At younger and younger ages, children are becoming dependent on electronic devices as their sources of entertainment and activity, which leads to an inactive lifestyle and is associated to future and obesity.
Parents need to lead by example. When we get home, we need to come up with unique ways to get the family together, other than being at the computer. We also need to get children involved in more physical activities.
Even going for a walk every evening in the summer as a family can unite the family as well as get the family moving.
With Love, AmmaNaana
